Spring speakers will present controversial topics

Two ongoing and controversial topics will be the subject of speakers this spring at Penn State Beaver
African American author Daryl Davis will present ‘Klan-Destine Relationships,’ 7 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 28, and filmmaker Mike Ramsdell will present ‘The Conflict Minerals Project,’ 6 p.m., Wednesday, March 14. The programs, which are free and open to the public, will be held in the campus Student Union Building auditorium.

Davis’ presentation provides an overview of his book by the same name in which he charts his experiences in infiltrating the Ku Klux Klan and offers a personal, real-life look at racism in the United Sates.

As he explored racism and gathered information for his book, Davis eventually became the recipient of robes and hoods from Klan members who came to him to rescind their beliefs. However, through his relationships Klan members, Davis believes he has come upon a successful method of forming friendships between sworn enemies.

Last year Ramsdell presented his award-winning documentary, ‘Anatomy of Hate: A Dialogue to Hope,’ at Beaver. He returns in March to discuss his project on the world’s conflict minerals, including tungsten, tin, tantalum, and gold which are used to make most modern electronic devices ranging from cell phones to aeronautics systems.

The term ‘conflict minerals’ is used because the majority of them come from the Democratic Republic of Congo which is widely considered to be the home of the worst human atrocities since World War II. In the past fifteen years, the Democratic Republic of Congo has witnessed six million dead, hundreds of thousands of women raped, and the displacement of millions of children, women, and men.

Four students honored by Pennsylvania Communication Association

Four Penn State Beaver senior communication majors were honored at the 72nd Annual Pennsylvania Communication Association Conference held last fall at Westminster College in New Wilmington.

Beaver alumnus Ted Froats, Jr., a senior at the time of the competition, and Trey Hudspeth won second place in the Undergraduate Research Competition for their paper ‘Questioning Fifteen Years of Research: A Study of the Effectiveness of Listening Styles Profile 16.’

In addition, Elizabeth Hain gave a poster presentation on ‘Intimate Partner Violence and Self-Verification Theory,’ a paper she coauthored with Ashley Stanfield.

The papers were written for the Communication Research Projects class taught by John Chapin, professor of communications.

Froats, who also served as Chapin’s research assistant last year, and Stanfield received their baccalaureate degrees from Beaver last semester.

In addition, Chapin, Froats, and Hudspeth coauthored a paper on listening styles, ‘Who’s listening to victims?,’ which was accepted for publication by the International Journal of Listening.

‘Both papers had practical applications,’ Chapin said. ‘Ted and Trey looked at how college students’ listening styles adapt for different contexts. Liz and Ashley were able to survey domestic violence victims from the local women's center and determine the impact of abuse on self-esteem and how it may predict future relationships.

‘It was great to see our students compete against their peers from other colleges and universities across the State,’ Chapin noted. ‘As more of our graduates choose to enroll in master’s degree programs, it's important for them to see they are ready.’

KKK infiltrator will speak on ‘Klan-Destine Relationships’

African American author and speaker Daryl Davis will present ‘Klan-Destine Relationships,’ 7 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 28 in the Student Union Building auditorium at Penn State Beaver. His presentation is free and open to the public and provides an overview of his book by the same name. Davis charts his experiences in infiltrating the Ku Klux Klan and offers a personal, real-life look at racism in the United Sates.

For more than a decade, Davis has had closer contact with members of the KKK than most white non-members and certainly most African Americans. His presentation includes stories of setting up surprise meetings with KKK leaders who were unaware of his race and attending Klan rallies.

On his journey to explore racism and gather information for his book, Davis eventually became the recipient of robes and hoods from Klan members who came to him to rescind their beliefs. Through his relationships, Davis believes he has come upon a successful method of forming friendships between sworn enemies.

His methods are controversial. Among some whites he has been deemed ‘politically incorrect’ and called an ‘Uncle Tom’ by some African Americans.

But Davis offers this challenge to his detractors: ‘I have Klan robes and hoods hanging in my closet, given to me voluntarily by members who have quit the Klan since coming to know me. That's what I've done to improve race relations. How many robes and hoods have you received as a result of your methods?’

The public is invited to attend a free presentation of slam poetry later this spring. Joaquin Zihuatanejo and Natasha Carrizosa will present ‘Fire and Rain’ at 7 p.m., Thursday, March 15, in the Student Union Building auditorium.
Slam poetry allows poets to perform original work, individually or as part of a team. Manner of presentation and enthusiasm are important as well as content of the work.

In their poetry, the duo captures their dual heritage while seeking to educate, enlighten, and entertain. Born of mestizo, or mixed blood, Joaquin and Natasha have fallen victim to the question, "What are you?" Their poems aim to answer that question by giving identity and voice to those born of two cultures as different as "Fire and Rain."

Zihuatanejo is the No. 1 ranked slam poet in the world as well as an award-winning teacher, and Carrizosa is the current Slam Champion of the Austin International Poetry Festival. Both performers have shared the stage with a variety of poets and performers, including Maya Angelou, Billy Collins, Alicia Keys and Erykah Badu.

Lady Lions basketball program teams up with Soles4Souls

The Penn State Beaver Lady Lions basketball team has launched a campus and community service project by teaming up with Soles4Souls, a charity designed to provide new shoes for global victims of poverty and natural disasters. The group also collects gently used shoes to support micro-business efforts to eradicate poverty. Soles4Souls' other two divisions, Clothes4Souls and Hope4Souls, provide the same relief and support through clothing and other necessities.

To date, the organization has donated more than 15 million pairs of shoes in the United States and around the world, including shoes for the victims of Hurricane Katrina and the Southeast Asian tsunami.

Bert DeSalvo, the team’s head coach, noted that the team "wanted to do something this year to help those less fortunate. In the past we’ve assisted environmental groups and women's groups, and this year we're going to do our best to help those outside Beaver County."

DeSalvo also noted that his wife Becky is involved in the project. She is the adult, transfer, and international admissions counselor at Beaver. "My wife is responsible for recruiting international students to our campus," DeSalvo said, "and I wanted to reach out to an organization that could potentially help people from areas that our international students may be from or be close to. I think this project will show how much the campus community can rally to help those from all parts of the world."

The team hopes to gather 238 pairs of shoes; that's exactly two pairs for each student athlete at Beaver campus. The public as well as all students, staff and faculty members are encouraged to drop off new or gently-worn shoes at one of five locations on campus: the gymnasium, Student Union Building, Harmony Hall residence hall, Student Activities Suite, and the faculty/staff mail room on the ground floor of the Ross Administration Building.

Shoes will be collected throughout the month of October. For information about the project, contact Becky DeSalvo at rmm27@psu.edu or 724-773-3809, contact the Athletic Department at ack121@psu.edu or 724-773-3826, or visit http://www.soles4souls.org.

Penn State Beaver invites the public to attend a free screening of the award-winning documentary, 'The Anatomy of Hate - A Dialogue to Hope,' at 6 p.m. Tuesday, April 5, in the auditorium of the campus Student Union Building. At 7:30 p.m., the film's director Mike Ramsdell will engage the audience in a discussion and question-and-answer session.

Due to the graphic nature of the film, children 17 and under must be accompanied by an adult. IDs will be checked.

For six years, Ramsdell worked with unprecedented access to some of the most venomous ideologies and violent conflicts of our time -- including the White Supremacy movement, Christian fundamentalism as an anti-gay platform, Muslim extremism, the Palestinian Intifada, Israeli settlers and soldiers, and United States military forces in Iraq.

‘The film weaves a tapestry that reveals both the emotional and biological mechanisms which make all of us susceptible to acts and ideologies of hate,’ said Ramsdell. ‘It demonstrates how these very same traits make us equally capable of overcoming them.’ The documentary juxtaposes film footage with interviews from experts in the fields of psychology, neurology, and sociology and intersperses stories of redemption told by former participants in hate ideologies.

‘The Anatomy of Hate’ was named Best Political Documentary at the Philadelphia Independent Film Festival in 2009 and won the Audience Choice Award at the Atlanta DocuFest. The documentary also was an official selection for the Boston International Film Festival, the Cinema City Film Festival, and the Saratoga Fringe Festival.

A group of Penn State Beaver students and Student Affairs staff members celebrated the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday on Monday, Jan. 17, by working in a variety of local and regional community outreach projects. About 80 students from Beaver and five other regional Penn State campuses gathered at Penn State Fayette to participate in numerous community service efforts. In addition, Beaver campus participants assisted the Center for Hope in moving into a new, larger location in Ambridge.

The Center for Hope was founded in 1994 by Fellowship United Methodist of Ambridge and Western Pennsylvania United Methodist Conference Center in Cranberry. The center, an inter-faith, not-for-profit organization that receives support from many churches, offers a food pantry, clothing closet, emergency food services, a Daily Bread Ministry, after-school programs, and youth champion cheerleading. In addition, literacy and life skills classes are offered by the Beaver campus Adult Literacy Action program. The Women, Infants and Children's program, which provides nutritionally sound food supplements to pregnant women and their children under age 5, is also available as well as the Office of Vocational Rehabilitation and a Lunch and Learn program for participants over 50.

Project participants were highlighted in two feature newspaper articles in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and the Herald Standard.

Carl Bartuch receives Beaver's Outstanding Alumni Award

Penn State Beaver alumnus Carl Bartuch received the Penn State Beaver 2010 Outstanding Alumni Award at a special joint dinner meeting of the Penn State Beaver Advisory Board and the Penn State Beaver Alumni Society, Wednesday, Jan. 19, in the Student Union Building.

The Outstanding Alumni Award recognizes Beaver alumni who have distinguished themselves through career achievement, community involvement, and/or involvement with the campus. The award was presented by Beaver Chancellor Gary Keefer and advisory board President-Elect Nick Andrews, president/owner of Andrews Industrial Controls Inc., on behalf of the advisory board and the alumni society.

Bartuch attended Beaver campus for two years and graduated from Penn State University Park with a degree in accounting in 1975. A native of Industry, Pa., he owns High Tech Finishing, the world’s leading supplier of high quality metal plating finishes for high-end business and luxury aircraft interiors, including Beech Jets, Falcon Jets, Gulfstreams and 737s. In addition, he owns Kegg’s Candies, a Houston-based manufacturer of gourmet chocolates, and Bartuch Holdings Ltd., an acquisition investment vehicle. He is an active campus supporter, served as the Beaver campus spring commencement speaker in 2008, and made a gift of $100,000 in support of the new campus wellness center expected to open in 2012.

Bartuch began his career as a cost accountant with Borg-Warner, a Fortune 500 Company, in Los Angeles, but returned to Pennsylvania to work for Piper Aircraft, ARCO Medical Products, and ARCO Specialty Chemicals. He moved to Houston where he was employed as a financial analyst for Lyondell Chemical Corporation before deciding to launch his own business.

Bartuch credits Beaver campus with giving him his professional start. "My professors at Beaver guided me in my academic choices before I moved on to Penn State University Park," he said. "I’m grateful for that because my days at Penn State were instrumental in my success as an entrepreneur." He is adamant about the advantages of starting his education at Beaver. "If I had it to do over again, I’d still choose the two plus two option of starting at Beaver and finishing my degree at University Park. It was just what I needed at that time in my life."
