Students at Penn State Beaver display engine, new research to ANSYS Users Group

Penn State Beaver is getting plenty of mileage out its replica of Henry Ford's first combustion engine.

On April 5 students from the campus demonstrated the engine and presented their continuing research into it at a meeting of the Western Pennsylvania ANSYS Users Group in Southpointe, Pa.

The engine was built in 2012 by sophomore engineering students as a class project for Engineering Mechanics: Dynamics taught by Jim Hendrickson, instructor in engineering.

Penn State Beaver students this spring have expanded the research of their predecessors by performing finite element analysis on the engine to estimate the forces and stresses developed in some of the principle components of the engine, Henrickson said.

That research, as well as a demonstration of the working engine, was one of four presentations by campus students to the ANSYS group, which is composed of users of the industry-leading software. ANSYS performs finite element analysis to help predict how products will operate in the real world.

The ANSYS group typically invites senior engineering students to present their projects at its spring meeting. This year marked the second in a row that sophomores from Penn State Beaver have been asked to participate. Beaver’s four teams gave nearly half of the presentations of the day.

The engine, which was awarded three blue ribbons when it was displayed at 2012 Maker Faire Detroit at the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, Mich., is a working replica of Ford’s Kitchen Sink Engine. That engine was never installed in a vehicle. Instead, it served as a proof of concept for his 1896 Quadricycle.

“The story goes that on Christmas Eve 1893 Henry Ford had his wife put down the turkey and come to the kitchen sink to help him start this thing,” Hendrickson said.

The engine was plugged into a light socket, and Ford and his wife regulated the fuel intake by hand. They got it started, and Ford went on to automotive history.

Nicholas Andrews receives Penn State Beaver Outstanding Alumni Award

Nicholas H. Andrews of Upper St. Clair, PA, received the 2012 Penn State Beaver Outstanding Alumni Award at an on-campus dinner meeting of the Penn State Beaver Advisory Board on January 16. The award was presented by Chancellor Gary Keefer and is given on the basis of professional achievement, contributions to society and/or involvement with Penn State Beaver.

Andrews attended Beaver campus for two years before receiving his bachelor’s degree in business at Penn State University Park in 1977. He played varsity baseball at Beaver in 1973 and 1974 and was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity at University Park. Today he is a member of the prestigious Penn State Smeal College of Business Presidents Club and is also a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity (Alpha Chi Chapter) at Penn State.

“Even though I graduated from a very competitive high school at Mt. Lebanon (Pittsburgh, PA), I can assure you that scholastically, my peers at Penn State Beaver were every bit as talented and driven,” said Andrews in accepting his award. “Penn State’s curriculum in the business school was solid - a great mix of advanced math, physics, chemistry, biology and all the humanities. I still interview candidates from many other schools and trust me, not many can match this.”

Andrews is president and owner of Andrews Industrial Controls, Inc., a company he founded in 1977 which employs more than 20 people. Located in Carnegie, the company is committed to servicing the energy industry for product solutions for measurement and controls throughout Western Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia and Maryland, including oil and gas, power generation, coal, chemicals, metals, mining, pulp, paper, and water quality.

In 2009 Andrews became president-elect of the Beaver campus Advisory Board. In addition, that year he established an annual scholarship to benefit Beaver campus students.

He is an active member of his community as well. He has served as president of the Pittsburgh Section Instrument Society of America and on the Board of Directors of the Chartiers Country Club. He was a member of the Representative Council for the Yokogawa Corporation of America, a member of the Representative Advisory Council of G.E. Masoneilan, and a member of the ABB Representative Advisory Council.

Andrews has continued his interest in athletics by serving as coach and commissioner of the Lebanon Baseball Association, a member of the Grounds Committee at Oakmont Country Club, and a member of the Board of Directors for Pittsburgh’s YMCA Camp T. F. Soles. He’s also served as a coach and business manager for various hockey organizations in and around Pittsburgh, a coach and commissioner for the Mt. Lebanon Baseball Association, and a director of youth athletics at St. Nicholas Cathedral.

Andrews and his wife, Bernice, have two sons: David, who also attended Beaver campus, and Scott, both of whom are Penn State graduates.
