Students honored at annual Undergraduate Research Fair

Twenty-three Penn State Beaver students participated in the Tenth Annual Undergraduate Research Fair held April 6 on campus. Students were required to work with a faculty mentor in researching their topic and preparing an oral and/or poster presentation. Presentations were made in a variety of academic areas, including chemistry, psychology, philosophy, information sciences and technology, and biology.

The winners were:
Oral Presentation
First Place: Raja Jasper, junior, information sciences and technology major, Sewickley, and Edward Knotek, junior, information sciences and technology major, Coraopolis
Topic: ‘Penn State Beaver BLT Fact Application for Android’
Faculty mentor: Kay Wijekumar, associate professor of information sciences and technology

Oral Presentation
Second Place: Joel Rosenstern, senior, letters, arts, and sciences major, Aliquippa
Topic: ‘The Impact of the Allegheny Front on Genetic Diversity of Little Brown Bats, and on the Spread of White Nose Syndrome in Pennsylvania’
Faculty mentor: Cassandra Miller-Butterworth, assistant professor of biology

Poster Presentation
First Place: Thomas Crawford, senior, psychology major, New Brighton
Topic: ‘Examining the Relation Between Trait Aggression and Violence-Rated Player Versus Player Style Video Games’
Faculty mentor: Minhnoi Wroble Biglan, assistant professor of psychology

Second Place: Katie Ann Jezewski, freshman, agriculture major, Freedom
Topic: ‘Undermining Natural Order?’
Faculty mentor: Irene Wolf, senior instructor in philosophy

The 2011 Undergraduate Research Fair Planning Committee members were:

Talha Harcar, associate professor of business;
Carol Schafer, associate professor of theatre, integrative arts, and women’s studies, and
Irene Wolf, senior instructor in philosophy.

Poster presentation judges were:
Peter Deutsch, associate professor of physics
Jaime Kincaid, therapist, Women’s Center of Beaver County
Terrie Krukenberg, senior vice president of business development, ESB Bank, and Penn State Beaver Advisory Board member
Luke Taiclet, director of finance and business

Oral presentation judges were:
John Feraco, manufacturing team leader, NOVA Chemicals, and president of the Penn State Beaver Advisory Board
Angela Fishman, instructor in mathematics and coordinator, Center for Academic Excellence
Kate Lichus, SCA administrator, Beaver County Behavioral Health

Alternate judges were:
Carleen Dinello, assistant director of academic affairs, and senior instructor in reading and English
Carol Schafer, associate professor of theatre, integrative arts, and women’s studies
Beth Theobald, reference librarian
