Penn State laureate begins statewide tour at Beaver campus
On Tuesday, Sept. 28, Penn State Laureate Robin Becker visited Penn State Beaver as the first stop on her statewide tour of 12 Penn State campuses. Becker, professor of English and women’s studies in the College of the Liberal Arts and a nationally acclaimed, award-winning poet, is the first Penn State laureate to make a tour of University campuses.
“I wanted to see the campuses, meet the faculty, staff and students, and understand what the community is about,” Becker said at a luncheon with faculty, staff and students on Tuesday. “I have been welcomed so warmly here at Beaver and I look forward to meeting the other campus communities.”
Becker’s agenda at Beaver included a morning meeting with the campus executive council and a campus tour followed by the luncheon. In the afternoon, Becker visited and spoke to the Cross-Cultural Psychology class taught by Clare Conry-Murray, assistant professor of psychology. Seventy students, faculty, staff and members of the community attended Becker’s poetry reading at 4 p.m., which was followed by a book signing and reception.
In addition to Beaver campus, Becker visited Penn State Greater Allegheny and Penn State New Kensington in September. October visits began with Penn State Fayette and will continue with Penn State Brandywine, Penn State Abington, Penn State Berks, and Penn State Lehigh Valley. In November, Becker will visit Penn State York, Penn State Harrisburg, Penn State Hershey Medical Center, and Penn State Mont Alto.
A member of Penn State's faculty since 1994, Becker has published seven books of poetry and has been highly sought contributor, judge, reviewer and critic in the field of poetry for nearly two decades. She has logged more than 125 speaking engagements across the United States, including readings of her work at numerous universities and venues including the National Arts Club and the New York Public Library. Becker has received many awards for her work, including the 1997 Lambda Literary Award in Lesbian Poetry for her book of poems titled ‘All-American Girl.’ From Prairie Schooner magazine, she received the 2010 Glenna Luschi Award for Excellence in Writing for 10 poems published in that journal. In addition, she has been active in service to Penn State, her college and department, and in 2000 was honored with the University's George W. Atherton Award for Excellence in Teaching.
