Spring commencement honors graduates

Penn State Beaver held its spring commencement 7 p.m. Friday, May 14, in the auditorium of the Student Union Building. Forty-seven students received master's, baccalaureate, and associate degrees.

The academic processional, recessional and convention of proceedings were led by Daniel W. Smith, instructor in business. Donna J. Kuga, director of academic affairs, presented the degrees which were conferred by Chancellor Gary B. Keefer in conjunction with John Hertneky, outgoing president of the Penn State Beaver Advisory Board and a consultant for Bayer Corp.

Keefer also introduced the commencement speaker, James Janicki, vice president and general manager of clinical diagnostics for Life Technologies Inc., a $3.5 billion company in Carlsbad, Calif. Janicki, a native of Freedom, attended Beaver campus before graduating from Penn State's University Park campus with a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering in 1986.

Michael W. Boser, president of the Beaver Valley Area Chapter of the Penn State Alumni Association, offered the Alumni Association’s welcome to the new graduates. A reception hosted by the Office of Housing and Food Services was held in the Brodhead Bistro immediately following commencement.
