Beaver alumnus is spring commencement speaker

4/26/2010 —

Penn State Beaver alumnus James Janicki, of San Mateo, Calif., will be the speaker for Beaver’s spring commencement at 7 p.m. on Friday, May 14, in the Student Union Building auditorium. Janicki graduated from Penn State University Park with a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering in 1986.

Since 2007, Janicki has been vice president and general manager of clinical diagnostics for Life Technologies Inc., a $3.5 billion company in Carlsbad, Calif. Clinical Diagnostics applies the newest molecular diagnostics (DNA testing) and the latest biomarker and antibody analysis technology to the transplant diagnostics market. The company’s products are used by hospitals around the world to determine the best match for patients awaiting donated organs or bone marrow. In addition, the company is working on a new technology to detect early signs of organ rejection in order to allow early medical intervention.

Janicki joined Life Technologies Inc. in 2005 as vice president of global operations, Cell Systems Division. Prior to that, he was head of global operational excellence for Sun Microsystems Inc. (now Oracle). He also worked for GE Lighting Inc., GE Plastics Inc. (now Sabic), Pharmacia and Upjohn Inc. (now Pfizer), and Union Carbide Corporation (now Dow Chemical).

He attended the Strategic Marketing Executive Program at Stanford University in 2007. Janicki is a Six Sigma Master Black Belt and has been a registered professional engineer since 1995. He holds a master of business administration degree from Western Michigan University and also studied at Marietta College.

The campus will host a reception in the Brodhead Bistro immediately following commencement ceremonies.
