Beaver campus wins Corporate Spelling Bee
Last week Penn State Beaver won first place in Adult Literacy Action’s (ALA) 14th Annual Corporate Spelling Bee held in the auditorium of the Student Union Building. The campus team was comprised of Dr. June Fishbourne, instructor in psychology, Gail Gray, student aid and veterans coordinator, and Renata Shaw, staff assistant for the Offices of the Chancellor and Campus and Community Relations.
Nine teams from area businesses and organizations competed for the first-place trophy. In addition to Beaver campus, other teams were: BASF Corporation, Blackhawk High School teachers, Community College of Beaver County, the Center for Hope, Comcast, Eaton Corporation, Heritage Valley Health System, and Performance Review Institute.
Event proceeds benefit the ALA, a not-for-profit organization that provides free adult education in reading, writing, math, GED preparation, distance learning, English for speakers of other languages, and family literacy. Last year ALA volunteer tutors and instructors served more than 800 adults at libraries and learning centers throughout Beaver County.
