ALA's Corporate Spelling Bee set for March 12
Penn State Beaver Adult Literacy Action will host its 14th Annual Corporate Spelling Bee at 6 p.m. on Thursday, March 12, in the auditorium of the Penn State Beaver Student Union Building. Teams of three community members are invited to participate. Proceeds from the event will benefit Penn State Beaver's Adult Literacy Action (ALA), a nonprofit organization that provides free adult education in reading, writing, math, GED preparation, distance learning, English for speakers of other languages and family literacy. Last year ALA volunteer tutors and instructors served more than 800 adults at libraries and learning centers throughout Beaver County. A reception for the teams will be held at 5 p.m. in the auditorium’s lobby.
Individuals, schools, businesses, government agencies and all organizations are welcome to assemble a team of three adult members. Each teams entry fee is $365, a number based on ALA's theme of "A Buck a Day for ALA." The winning team will receive the Corporate Spelling Bee Traveling Trophy to display until next year’s event.
Fans and members of the public are invited to attend for free, and cheering squads are encouraged. A Team Spirit Award will be given to squads based on best exhibition of banners, most uniquely dressed members, amount of fundraising conducted by fans, etc. Gifts, prizes and plaques for first, second and third place Team Spirit Award winners will be given and free audience gifts will be awarded throughout the evening.
Cash donations and gifts-in-kind also are needed to provide door prizes, team incentive awards and other give-away items. Event sponsors will be permitted to hang company or organization banners in the auditorium.
