Baseball team wins four in the east
Last weekend the baseball team traveled to eastern Pennsylvania where they won two double headers. On Saturday, Sept. 20, they defeated Penn State Wilkes-Barre, 9-4 and 12-0, and Sunday’s wins were over Penn State York, 7-0 and 18-4.
In Saturday’s first game, freshman Bryan Strehl (Beaver Falls) pitched four innings and struck out four. Sophomore Huston Lorenzo (Miami) led the team with two hits and four RBIs while junior Joe Scherer (Sewickley) followed with three hits and two RBIs. Juniors Reed Shwertz (Freedom) and Justin Parasida (Ambridge) each had two hits and sophomore Jake Gram (Louisville, Ohio) came in as the relief pitcher to close the game.
In game two of the double header, Gram pitched three shut-out innings and Lorenzo led with four RBIs. Schwertz, junior Cody Moldovan (Ellwood City) and freshman Dan Sonsini (Aliquippa) each added two hits.
In Sunday’s first game against York, Beaver scored first in the third inning with three runs and had four more runs in the top of the sixth. Scherer pitched the entire game and struck out five. He also led Beaver with three hits while Lorenzo and Sonsini each drove in two RBIs.
In game two, Beaver scored 11 runs in the top of the first and scored again in the top of the second and third innings with five runs. The mercy rule was invoked in the top of the fifth when Beaver led York, 18-4.
Scherer led Beaver with five hits and three RBIs and Schwertz had three RBIs. Moldovan contributed a double and two singles as he drove in four runs and junior Justin Parasida (Ambridge) had four runs.
The team’s next game is a noon doubleheader Saturday, Sept. 27, at Penn State Greater Allegheny. The Lions are 6-2 overall and 6-2 in the conference.
