'Voices Against Violence' is theme of October programs
In observance of October as National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Penn State Beaver will present plays and programs centered on the theme of "Voices Against Violence." These events are sponsored by the campus in collaboration with the Penn State Beaver Commission for Women, the Women’s Center of Beaver County, the Pennsylvania Office of Victims’ Services Survivors Speakers Bureau, the Coalition of Pennsylvania Crime Victim Organizations (COPCVO), Crisis Center North and other campus and community groups.
Carol Schafer, associate professor of theatre, integrative arts and women's studies, will direct her students in "Love / Not Love," a collection of short plays dealing with abusive relationships and violence. Performances will be held at noon on Wednesday, Oct. 1, and Friday, Oct. 3, and at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 2, in the auditorium of the Student Union Building. Plays featured are "This Property Is Condemned" by Tennessee Williams, "The Blue Room" by Courtney Baron and "Dancing with a Devil" by Brooke Berman.
The Oct. 2 performance will be followed by a panel discussion about relationships and abuse featuring members of the Survivors Speakers Bureau of the Coalition of Pennsylvania Crime Victims Organizations. The discussion will be moderated by Grace Coleman, executive director of Crisis Center North, a counseling and advocacy center for victims of domestic violence that serves north and west Pittsburgh and Allegheny County. Counselors from the Women’s Center of Beaver County will be on hand for small group discussions after the performances on Oct. 1 and 3.
Jackson Katz, noted anti-sexist male activist and author of "The Macho Paradox," will give a presentation at noon on Wednesday, Oct. 29, in the Student Union Building auditorium.
