Outstanding Alumni Award recipient speaks to business class
Nick Andrews, recipient of the 2012 Penn State Beaver Outstanding Alumni Award, recently spoke to the Strategic Business Planning class taught by Ed Weaver, lecturer in business. Andrews is founder, president and owner of Andrews Industrial Controls Inc. in Carnegie. He attended Beaver campus before graduating from Penn State's University Park campus with a bachelor’s degree in business in 1977.
His company services the energy industry for product solutions for measurement and controls throughout western Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia and Maryland, including oil and gas, power generation, coal, chemicals, metals, mining, pulp, paper and water quality.
In the class, Andrews spoke about his time as a Beaver student as well as the many friends he made who are now in a variety of leadership positions. He discussed the background of his company’s formation and his time spent in industrial equipment sales. He also provided information about the business plan he developed when he decided to start his own company and gave an overview of the impact that the shale gas industry is going to have on our region as well as the job opportunities it will provide.
One of his main points, however, was the academic challenges he faced and welcomed when he attended Beaver campus. When Andrews received the Outstanding Alumni Award earlier this year, he also focused on this in his acceptance speech.
“Even though I graduated from a very competitive high school at Mount Lebanon (Pittsburgh), I can assure you that scholastically, my peers at Penn State Beaver were every bit as talented and driven,” he said. “Penn State’s curriculum in the business school was solid - a great mix of advanced math, physics, chemistry, biology and all the humanities. I still interview candidates from many other schools and trust me, not many can match this.”
Andrews also served as a member of the Penn State Beaver Advisory Board and established an annual scholarship to benefit Beaver students. In addition, he serves on the boards of many professional and community organizations. For more information about Andrews, contact the Chancellor’s Office at 724-773-3553.
