Beaver students hold candlelight vigil for campus and community
The Penn State Beaver Student Government Association held a candlelight vigil at 6 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 1 in recognition and support of sexual abuse victims of all ages. The vigil, held beside the pond at the Brodhead Cultural Center, was attended by more than 50 students, staff, faculty, and members of the community, including Beaver County District Attorney Anthony Berosh.
The event was covered that evening by KDKA-TV News, Pittsburgh, and the following morning in the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.
Blue ribbons were given to every attendee to wear since blue is the color chosen to symbolize sexual abuse. Speakers at the vigil were Jill Marsilio-Colonna, director, Women’s Center of Beaver County; Dr. John Chapin, professor of communications, Penn State Beaver; and Mr. LaVarr McBride, instructor in administration of justice at Beaver, Penn State New Kensington, and Penn State Shenango.

Students will conduct outreach for Martin Luther King holiday
Continuing their tradition of taking “A Day On, Not a Day Off,” many Penn State Beaver students will join students from the western Penn State campuses to conduct community services projects on Martin Luther King Day, Monday, Jan. 16. The day is a holiday for Penn State students.
Every year students from Penn State’s western campuses join forces to conduct outreach efforts in their local communities. This year’s primary coordinating campus is Penn State New Kensington. Robin Schreck, Beaver’s coordinator of student activities and residence life, will take Beaver students to New Kensington to work with them in service projects there.
However, other Beaver students will work locally at a variety of community outreach centers, including Uncommon Grounds in Aliquippa, Beaver County Habitat for Humanity, and the Center for Hope in Ambridge, which offers a food bank, clothing bank, literacy services, and life skills training.
For more information about the students’ activities on Martin Luther King Day, contact Schreck at firstname.lastname@example.org or 724-773-3947.
