Beaver students, staff make Martin Luther King Jr. Day a 'day on'

On Monday, Jan. 17, students and staff from Penn State Beaver joined other
Penn State campuses in celebrating the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday with the
"Make It a Day On, Not a Day Off' project. Beaver campus was one of six
campuses that each sent 15 students to participate in a regional effort
sponsored by Penn State Fayette. In addition, 17 Beaver campus students and
staff volunteered to spend the day at the Center for Hope in Ambridge, which
currently is moving to a new location.

Penn State Beaver welcomes new faculty

Penn State Beaver welcomed two new faculty members at the start of the spring
semester. Neelam Dwivedi is an instructor in information sciences and
technology (IST), and Beth Theobald is the reference librarian. Dwivedi has
more than 20 years of experience as a software system developer and
project/program manager and also has worked as a corporate trainer and
consultant. Most recently, Theobald was a library intern with the digital
repository at Carnegie Mellon University and has held other library positions

Beaver United Way Committee raises $5,000

The Penn State Beaver United Way Committee raised $5,002 last fall, exceeding
their 2009 total by $400. Funds were raised through a variety of projects,
including a luncheon and auction, dress-down days, and personal
solicitations.

Alumni chapter's annual project results in gifts for 120 children

In December, the Beaver Valley Area Chapter of the Penn State Alumni
Association completed its annual Gift Drive for Beaver County Children and
Youth Services. The collected presents were given to 120 children who are
clients of Children and Youth Services. The alumni chapter has conducted the
gift drive for almost 20 years, and each year more than 100 children have
received gifts.

Communications faculty member coauthors two articles

John R. Chapin, associate professor of communications, is the coauthor of two
recently published articles. "Yes we can! Improving medical screening for
intimate partner violence through self-efficacy" was published in the latest
edition of The Journal of Injury and Violence Research. "Domestic Violence:
Not my Job, Not my Problem" was published in the December, 2010 edition of the

Penn State Beaver Admissions Office will hold events on Jan. 29

The Penn State Beaver Admissions Office will host an application workshop from
9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and a financial aid workshop from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., both
on Saturday, Jan. 29, in the Student Union Building.

Basketball teams competed over holidays

While most Penn State students relaxed after the New Year holiday before
returning for the spring semester, Penn State Beaver's men's and women's
basketball teams were busy competing out-of-state. The men's basketball team
participated in the Southern Virginia Classic Tournament in Buena Vista, Va.,
and the women competed in the Purple and Gold Poet Classic in Whittier,
Calif.

Penn State CI Day to showcase cyberinfrastructure, Jan. 31 to Feb. 1

On Jan. 31 and Feb. 1, Penn State will hold Cyberinfrastructure Day (CI Day),
an event designed to foster nationwide conversation about the strategic role
of cyberinfrastructure in academia, government and industry. CI Day is
sponsored by a grant from the National Science Foundation and will enable
participants to explore how interconnected systems of computational resources,
repositories, communication networks, research instrumentation, environmental
sensors and information displays are enhancing research and education
endeavors around the world, in fields ranging from nanotechnology to study of
