Basketball teams competed over holidays

1/17/2011 —

While most Penn State students relaxed after the New Year holiday before returning for the spring semester, Penn State Beaver’s men’s and women’s basketball teams were busy competing out-of-state.

The men’s basketball team participated in the Southern Virginia Classic Tournament in Buena Vista, Va., and the women competed in the Purple and Gold Poet Classic in Whittier, Calif.

On Friday, Jan. 7, the Eastern Mennonite University Royals (Harrisonburg, Va.) defeated the Beaver Nittany Lions, 98-71. The Lions trailed by only seven in the first half, but the Royals went on two runs that cost Beaver the game. Beaver junior Tony Houghton (Perry Traditional Academy/Pittsburgh) scored 18 to lead Beaver, and senior Billy Stoughton (Slippery Rock High School/Slippery Rock) added 11 points.

The following day, the Lions were felled by the Southern Virginia University Knights, 97-57. Beaver moved into halftime with a deficit of 44-17 and never recovered. Beaver freshman Nick Miller (Beaver Falls High School/Beaver Falls) led in scoring with 14, and junior Tony Houghton (Perry Traditional Academy/Pittsburgh) added 10 points. The Lions are now 4-6 overall.

On Monday, Jan. 3, the Chapman University Panthers (Orange, Calif.) defeated the Beaver Lady Lions, 73-65. In the first half, Beaver fell into a 14-point deficit after shooting 33.3 percent from the field compared to Chapman's 50 percent. Chapman built a 23-point lead in the second half before the Lady Lions mounted a comeback to close the final gap to eight points.
