In an ongoing effort to prepare members of the local workforce for job opportunities in the Marcellus and Utica shale industry, Penn State Beaver has partnered with the Shale Training and Education Center (ShaleTEC) at the Pennsylvania College of Technology (Penn College) in Williamsport.
ShaleTEC is a collaboration between Penn College and Penn State Extension designed to provide a wide variety of resources to the community and the oil and gas industry. Penn State Beaver is a ShaleTEC affiliate.
"A compatible workforce with appropriate skills and training to meet the demands of the energy sector will be critical to the region’s success," said Marian Vendemia, director of continuing education at Beaver. "Beaver has become an affiliate of ShaleTEC. We acquire expanded curriculum and instructional capability needed to train and educate existing employees of gas companies and those who want to enter the natural gas industry," Vendemia said. "Beaver's goal is to provide job-seekers with an opportunity to pursue the education and training needed to qualify for employment in the energy sector."
She explained that those who enroll for shale training programs at Beaver campus will have access to a wide range of resources offered at ShaleTEC, which addresses a multitude of training and education needs of the natural gas industry.
"We feel these courses will complement the other successful industry programs offered at Beaver campus," said Tracy Brundage, assistant vice president for Workforce Development and Continuing Education at Penn College. "ShaleTEC has trained nearly 4,400 students over the past fifteen months, and our ShaleTEC affiliate program is expanding throughout the region to help meet the demand."
That demand is for trained workers to support the various occupations associated with the development of Pennsylvania’s natural gas resources. According to ShaleTEC studies, each well requires a workforce of approximately 420 individuals working across 150 different occupations.
