What did you like most about Penn State Beaver?
I really liked the atmosphere of the campus, from all of the students and professors to the many different activities that were held on campus.
What was your favorite class?
Being a programmer, you would think it would be something dealing with IST or computers, but my favorite class was actually The History of The Beatles. It was my favorite class because I’ve always enjoyed listening to classic rock, and The Beatles had some of my favorite songs.
My Penn State Story
Coming out of high school, I knew that I wanted to do something with computers and programming, so I was looking around at a few different local colleges, including Penn State Beaver. I chose to get my degree from Penn State because the campus was close to home, I was able to graduate from there even though I had the option to transfer to University Park, and for the world-renowned name of the University.
On orientation day, I met my academic adviser, Dr. Kay Wijekumar. From that moment on, I knew that if I needed help with anything, she was the one to go to. Over my four years at Penn State Beaver, each class I took prepared me for the real world. When it came time to look for an internship, I went to Dr. Wijekumar for some suggestions on where to apply, and she recommended FedEx Ground. FedEx Ground's headquarters is located very close to Pittsburgh and Penn State Beaver, in Moon Township. When I first started researching FedEx, I learned this is one of the best companies to work for, so I put in my application to intern there.
In March 2011, I had an interview for the intern position at FedEx Ground. The internship was a 10-week program during the summer of 2011. While I was there I worked very hard each day and utilized several of the skills that I learned from my professors at Penn State Beaver. Towards the end of my internship, my manager was very pleased with my work. He asked if I would be interested in coming on full-time after graduation if they were able to get an associate position open in their department. A few months after I completed my internship, I received an acceptance letter from FedEx for that full-time position..
Little did I know at the time that my internship would be the spark that would jump start my career and help me land my first job.
I currently work for FedEx Services as an Associate Programmer Analyst supporting a time and labor application for FedEx Ground, and I have been working there for almost two years. In the end, I wouldn't be where I am today without the help of my professors at Penn State Beaver.
