Kay Wijekumar, associate professor of information sciences and technology at Penn State Beaver, is the primary author of an article published recently in the journal Computers & Education.

The article, titled “High-Fidelity Implementation of Web-Based Intelligent Tutoring System Improves Fourth and Fifth Graders’ Content Area Reading Comprehension,” was written with Bonnie Meyer, professor of educational psychology in the Penn State College of Education, and Pui-Wa Lei, associate professor of education.

Wijekumar is the creator of the Intelligent Tutoring System for the Structure Strategy (ITSS), which aims to increase reading comprehension for students in grades 4 through 12. Her recent article report how this Web-based tutoring system helped to improve reading comprehension among fourth- and fifth-grade students. She ran large scale randomized controlled trials as principal investigator and director. Earlier this year she wrote a grant report, “Efficacy Grant on ITSS (Intelligent Tutor Structure Strategy)” and co-authored a technical report, “The Effects of Odyssey Math on Grade 4 Student Math Achievement in the Mid-Atlantic Region,” both of which were published by the Institute of Education Sciences.

In 2011 Wijekumar co-authored an article, "Web-Based Tutoring of the Structure Strategy With or Without Elaborated Feedback or Choice for Fifth and Seventh-Grade Readers," in the Reading Research Quarterly. She is currently the principle investigator on three research projects for which she has received almost $6 million. In addition to teaching and conducting extensive research, Wijekumar regularly takes her IST students to universities and businesses around the world to allow them first-hand experience in not only attending scholarly presentations as well as delivering their own group presentations on their IST research.

In 2011 she traveled to Italy with students from her Senior Synthesis Class, which presented its iPhone and Droid Application Development and Prototype at the International Conference on Computer Applications in Venice. In 2012 Wijekumar traveled with students to Germany where the students gave a presentation at the International Association for Development of the Information Society Conference, 2012 Information Systems. The students were from Wijekumar’s capstone course titled Information Sciences and Technology Integration and Problem Solving.

She has also traveled with IST students to Spain and Singapore. Wijekumar received the 2006 Penn State Beaver Advisory Board Faculty Excellence in Research Award and was named Outstanding Academic Advisor in 2008 by the Student Government Association. She holds a doctorate in instructional systems from Penn State, a master’s degree in computer science from the University of Pittsburgh and a bachelor’s degree in electronics engineering from Franklin University. Wijekumar can be contacted at kxw190@psu.edu or 724-773-3814.
